On Wednesday 23rd of March 2011, the Proposed Auckland Spatial Plan was introduced by Len Brown. Amongst other things, I found the Mayor's vision for the management of the natural environment to be particularly thought provoking; "Auckland becoming an eco city". Eco city is a word often bandied around within planning literature, but what exactly does it mean and what is its relevance to the Auckland Region? This blog will be used to explore ideas, concepts and examples related to 'eco cities' to try and gain a global understanding of the concept and its application to the Auckland Region. The starting point for this is the broad definition given by the Auckland Council within the previously mentioned document; "Being an eco city requires a strong commitment to conserving resources, minimising waste, preserving our biodiversity and natural habitat to enhance liveability, and generating new sustainable economic opportunities. It also calls on everyone to play their part to look at more efficient vehicles and renewable energy options for heating homes and work places" (Auckland Council, 2011).http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/EN/ABOUTCOUNCIL/PLANSPOLICIESPUBLICATIONS/THEAUCKLANDPLAN/DISCUSSIONDOCUMENT/Pages/environment.aspx

As I said at Te Hana Marae, I wonder if the frame 'Eco city' unconsiously ignores rural Auckland? Should the phrase be 'Eco region' to shift our paradigm to a more inclusive view of ourselves?
